Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Plan and prepare for coordination of air drilling operations
  2. Examine correct air drilling procedures
  3. Conduct housekeeping activities

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient coordination of air drilling operations through:

identifying, addressing and reporting potential hazards and risks

controlling identified hazards

implementing emergency response plan and procedures

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues

rectifying and/or reporting faults and malfunctions

works effectively with others to plan, prepare, undertake and coordinate air drilling operations to meet all required outcomes including:

preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones

demonstrates completion of coordinating air drilling operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

applying air drilling and conventional mud drilling techniques

watching parameters during operations

performing calculations including:

annular velocity

sinking/slipping velocity

pressure

flow test procedure

volume

conversion between metric and imperial

use of a calculator

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge in applying coordination to air drilling operations through:

accessing, interpreting and applying legislative, organization and site requirements and procedures for:

identifying and managing risks

site isolation, signage and erecting barriers

work health and safety

selecting and checking for faults, all plant, tools and equipment to carry out tasks

carrying out work to specifications

explaining tripping procedures to crew

applying effective techniques for air drilling operations

standard working practices and procedures for air drilling operations

determining pressure volume requirements

maintaining air requirements
